What Age is Alcoholism Most Prevalent?

image: young man angry about alcoholic behavior of girlfriendWhen focusing on what age is alcoholism most prevalent, we must be careful and clearly define what we are asking.  For instance, some people might interpret this question as meaning the age at which most people drink alcohol.

While this is a legitimate question, it is not what our original question stated.  Please continue reading for some "interesting" alcohol-related information.

Two Relatively Recent Surveys on Alcoholism

According to the 2004-2005 Australian Bureau of Statistics National Health Survey, the proportion of adults who had consumed alcohol at levels which, if continued, would be risky or a high risk to their health for both men and women was the 55 - 64 year old age group.

The main difference between the Australian and the NHDS studies was the age groups that were established.

For instance, the Australian survey placed middle aged people in the 55 - 64 age group, whereas the NHDS study placed middle aged people in the 45 - 64 age group.

The following represents all of the age groups established by the NHDS studies:

  • 15 - 24 years old
  • 25- 44 years old
  • 45 - 64 years old
  • 65+ years old

In the strictest sense of the word, people cannot buy alcoholic beverage licenses. Certainly there are many fees associated with obtaining a liquor license, but the more accurate description for obtaining such a license focuses more on the many requirements of the application process.

Since the most recent (NHDS) findings were done in 2003, the following represents the findings from the 2003 study:

Alcohol Dependence Syndrome

  1. 45 - 64 years old
  2. 25 - 44 years old
  3. 65+ years old
  4. 15 - 24 years old

Alcoholic Psychoses

  1. 45 - 64 years old
  2. 25 - 44 years old
  3. 65+ years old
  4. 15 - 24 years old

If you think you are addicted to alcohol or drugs, realizing that you have a problem is the first step in getting help.

Alcoholic Cirrhosis

  1. 45 - 64 years old
  2. 25 - 44 years old
  3. 65+ years old
  4. 15 - 24 years old

More than 2 million Americans suffer from alcohol-related liver disease.  Some drinkers, moreover, develop alcoholic hepatitis (that is, an inflammation of the liver) as a result of long-term heavy drinking.

Nondependent Abuse of Alcohol

  1. 45 - 64 years old
  2. 25 - 44 years old
  3. 65+ years old
  4. 15 - 24 years old

The amount of alcohol in the blood is called blood alcohol concentration or blood alcohol content (BAC).  Alcohol is metabolized at the rate of .015 of (BAC) every hour.  For instance, a person with a BAC of .15 (this BAC is almost twice the legal amount when driving) will have no measurable alcohol in his or her bloodstream ten hours after the last drink (.15 divided by .015 = 10).

Unfortunately, NHDS did not make their age groups less inclusive so that specific ages could be isolated and focused on.  Nonetheless, the above NHDS findings clearly show that for Alcohol Dependence, Alcoholic Psychoses, Alcoholic Cirrhosis, and for Alcohol Abuse, the most prevalent age for all of these conditions was for the group of people between the ages of 45 - 64 years old.

When combined with other drugs, legal or illegal, alcohol accounts for approximately 33% of all drug overdoses in the
United States.

What Age is Alcoholism Most Prevalent:  Conclusion

Depending on which study one refers to, the answer to the question "what age is alcoholism most prevalent" is either the 55-64 year-old age group (according to the 2004-2005 Australian Bureau of Statistics National Health Survey) or the 45 - 64 year-old age group (as per the 2003 National Hospital Discharge Survey done in the United States).

Since both surveys labeled each respective age group as "middle aged people," it would appear that the people in the middle age group represent the age at which alcoholism is most common.
